Kiehl’s Makes a Fair Trade

March 31st, 2008 · 3 Comments

akiehlsfairtradebravo.jpgKiehl’s has just launched a new product line featuring their first ingredients obtained through fair trade.  Welcome Kiehl’s Superbly Restorative Body Lotion and Superbly Restorative Dry Oil.

Kiehl’s has dedicated itself to giving back to the global community.  The best way to do that is to obtain ingredients through fair trade and use organic ingredients like 100% certified organic Argan Oil.

So what’s Argan Oil?

Take a little bit of the Argan Forest of Southern Morocco to your home.  Considered a treasure, Argan Oil is pressed from the nut of the Argan Tree’s fruit.  Berber women in Morocco’s Atlas Mountain region use the oil in beauty and culinary preparations, the natural fatty acids in the oil provide essential nourishment.  On top of that, the oil has anti-aging properties, so it’s an all around winner.

Superbly Restorative Products:

-Superbly Restorative Body Lotion is a hydrating, antioxidant moisturizer that improves the skin’s tone and resilience. (On-counter in April)
-Superbly Restorative Dry Oil is a multi-purpose formula to be used on both skin and hair, which improves the appearance of skin tone, and helps to smooth split ends and add a healthy sheen to hair.  (On-counter in April)
-Superbly Restorative Skin Salve is a multi-purpose concentrated formula for intensive skin and hair relief and maintenance, and can be used for soothing everything from chapped noses, rough elbows and knees, sore muscles, and hair fly-aways. (On-counter in June.)

Fair Trade? Some of the basic ideas of Fair Trade:

Creating opportunities for economically disadvantaged producers
Transparency and accountability
Capacity building
Payment of a fair price
Gender Equality
Safe working conditions
Environmental protection

I may pick some of this up, I def want to reward Kiehl’s good behavior.  If there is a strong turnout, Kiehl’s will continue to make good deals for the ingredient suppliers and we’ll all benefit from such a good thing.

Vogue April 2008 Gisele Bundchen & LeBron James

March 31st, 2008 · 3 Comments

Is Vogue’s April 2008 cover Racist?

In Vogue’s history (over 100 years) this is the first time a black man is featured on the cover.  Gisele Bundchen and LeBron James are at the center of a controversy.  Some have compared the pic to a King Kong clutching a white woman and the teeth baring look on LeBron demeaning.  I can see both sides of this argument.  On one side big deal, “races” have been mixing and the fact that Gisele is from Brazil is interesting since Brazil (like America) has a long, and at times, somewhat unpleasant history of inter-racial relations.  On the other hand it is insulting, why would he be clutching her like that in that setting, wearing that!

Vogue has waited all this time and this is what we get?

Not to discount LeBron’s fabulousness BUT… there have been countless black men that have been “on top of their game” and not featured. What’s so different about April 2008?  It’s the only time in history that there is a big potential we’ll have our first black presidential nominee.  Interesting timing to say the least.  But I’d hate to think that…

Maybe the goal was to present Gisele in a different way?  We see her everywhere, I even opened up Money Magazine and there she was!  By the way, you’ll be relieved to know that she doesn’t demand Euros as was rumoured!

Chances are good that famed photog Annie Liebovitz wanted to do something different that we’d stop and notice, if that was the goal it worked.

Is it racist?

On first glance YES! what’s so fashionable about a b-ball uniform?  maybe it’s just fashionable to be photographed with a light woman?  It’s hard to say, we just don’t know if the people at Vogue did this intentionally to stir up publicity. Or perhaps they are so out of touch with reality that they don’t understand that real people don’t like to look at caricatures.  I hate to blanket the whole thing with “racist” because we just don’t know what went on behind the scenes.

Lancome Juicy Tubes World Tour w/Christopher Kane

March 31st, 2008 · No Comments

Christopher Kane Juicy TubesFor sure you know Lancome and Juicy Tubes, but you may not be familiar with Christopher Kane, may I admit I wasn’t?  He’s relatively new to the designer landscape, before graduating Central St. Martins he participated and won top prizes in the Lancome Color Design Awards - TWICE.  Then he won the Harrod’s Award for Design which all led him to wild acclaim and kudos for his Spring 2007 fashion show.  Style.com said the show “zings with amazing new energy and optimism”.  Kane’s an international sensation it seems, someone we’re sure to see lots more of!  He’s a favorite designer of Victoria Beckham and Kate Moss.

Now he’s touring the world promoting his latest creation, a collaboration with Lancome to create their best Juicy Tubes shades yet.  If you’ve never tried Juicy Tubes, you’ve got to! it is an absolute MUST, if you’re not convinced, head to your nearest counter to test immediately.  Juicy Tubes retail for $18 and are worth every penny, I can seriously recommend to anyone, anywhere.  The shine is just so perfect, it’s not sticky like other glosses and appropriate for any situation, I can even see serious girls heading to work with this on because it’s not at all an in-your-face type of gloss, it’s understated gloss that is elegant.  Now it is fuzed with classy vibrant designs you’d only see on the most glamourous women from around the world, note the amazing names.

Christopher Kane Lancome Juicy Tubes New Christopher Kane Juicy Tube Collection:

*Red Hot New York (perfect red gloss)

*Fifth Avenue Frosting

*Copacabana Coffee

*Rio Mango

*Grand Café Crème Brûlée

John Frieda Shampoo/Conditioner on my list

March 30th, 2008 · 1 Comment

John Frieda Shampoo/Conditioner

Shampoo, Conditioner and Laundry Detergent!  I don’t think I can ever get enough of these three things, we are constantly running out of product.  Something I’ve always wanted to try but never got around to is John Frieda’s brilliant brunette shampoo and conditioner.  I’ve heard good things about John Frieda’s line so I’m going to play drugstore roulette and try. I def like the price tag on these, only $6!

Shout out if you have any experience.
