My name is Delphine and I live in Maine where my husband of 12 years is stationed. I’ve always loved to drink tea, my mother is a big tea drinker, but now I know I was drinking a lot teesans that were not true teas. I love that tea is so universal, anywhere you go they are sure to steep something in hot water to warm the body and spirit.
I’m originally from Queens, New York and left when I was 19. I did two years at Pace University majoring in business but wasn’t really motivated and didn’t understand I should have gotten an Associates Degree out of that. Anyway, one day coming home I saw a big “GO NAVY” sign at Queensboro Plaza and the rest is history. I signed up and went into a delayed entry program, which gave me almost 3 months to fool around aimlessly!
It was at this time that I really got into make up, cosmetics, fitness and generally spending my time wrapped up in how I looked. All that went out the window in Boot Camp which was pretty easy even thought I’d never ran before or did a pushup or even a situp. I was naturally skinny and walked if I needed to get somewhere.
They confiscated a lot of my stuff that I thought I could smuggle in. Anything in a glass bottle was taken, tweezers, little manicure scissors - gone! How cruel could they be! To make things worst I was in an integrated company so I had to be around a bunch of guys with not a stick of makeup.
My first set of orders sent me to Key West, Florida. I had such a great time there and got a husband out of the deal, but not before some twists and turns of course. No department stores or boutique beauty shops so I got a lot from the drugstores. I also stuck to the old fashioned type of beauty items, witch hazel, vitamin e oil, cetaphil and oil of olay. At 20 you don’t really need a lot of extra potent items. I did spend on lots of different lipsticks and mascara mascara mascara.
I spent a year in Miami attending the University of Miami and waiting for my now husband to propose. It was less than a 3 hour drive and he would come up almost every weekend or I would go down if he had duty. This was a really fun period of our lives except I was a starving student and got dangerously thin during this time. I had not a penny to my name and didn’t want to ask my mom for money. I was seriously scrounging for food everywhere I went. If my boyfriend took me to a fast food I would get some condiments or pack anything like the bread or whatever. I was working at night so I didn’t have much of a social life other than him and the old lady I had for housemate (this is a looooong story if you want to hear one). She would make me cheese sandwiches every few days, she was sweet but old and set in her ways. She took in a Russian flight student and wanted me to sit with them almost every night to entertain him while she did a grand service, it was such a weird experience but free food was worth him asking me the particulars of curse words and off the wall cultural questions. I only lived there 7 months or so but she really made her mark on me.
Right around this time my then boyfriend was up for orders, I talked him into taking some to Japan (he wanted to really!) We got married and six months later were in Japan. This is where I got my skin care obsession. Skincare is BIG in Japan… all the girls work on that flawless complexion first. They eat specials foods, cleanse and spend money on quality and tone matching their foundations and powders. They spend a lot less on make up and more on skin care. I really started taking care of my complexion and taking in enough water and vitamins as well as cod liver oil capsules. I grew to love Shiseido and Kanebo while I was there. We spent four years in Japan and had a great tme, learned a lot and went lots of places. I love Japan for the people first and foremost, bathing products, onsens and skin care.
We spent the first 6 years of our marriage as DINKs but, next we went to Maine and that did the trick. Unbelievably we have been here 7 years! I must admit it does get old sometimes. I have made some major accomplishments here: got my Bachelors Degree in Humanities, had three lovely kids and started blogging of course.
