A [...]]]> I’ve been so tired lately!  so tired that when I sit in front of my laptop I fall asleep — no kidding!  last night I had a great movie from Netflix and didn’t even get to the opening credits!  I’m just saying it’s great, I really have no idea as I still haven’t seen it! 

A big part of my fatigue has been dealing with the snowstorms two weeks in a row and losing electricity.  All this just as I was feeling better from dealing with the recession!  By the way, I have good news is dear hubby is once again happily employed!!

It’s gross at first but it looked [...]]]> Here’s the healthy post of the week.  I’ve heard a lot about the neti pot since its appearance on Oprah Winfrey – one of the very few episodes I missed I guess.  A few weeks ago I was obsessed with watching other people on youtube try out different neti pots.

It’s gross at first but it looked painless, I kept on watching to see someone who would give up or say it hurt but no so vid appeared before me.  So, I went ahead and decided to try for myself.

There are several different types of neti pots to choose from, ceramic, metal and plastic.  The ceramics are very pretty and white but with a household of three kids and klutzy adults I decided to go with the plastic neti pot called the Rhino Horn.  I wish it was available in more colors, right now they sell red and blue but at only $14 it’s a great price and the best fit for my lifestyle. 

I’m pleased with the results.  I don’t have sinus problems regularly so I’m using this for preventative and cleansing reasons.  If you do have any type of sinus issues or just want to get pollen, dirt, dust or other pollutants out of your system look into a neti pot before the allergen season arrives.  According to instructions you can do it once daily if necessary.

how to use a neti pot:

The hardest part about using a neti pot is getting the water temp just right.  The water should be lukewarm to be comfortable.  I use warm water, put my salt in and let it stand, I stir a little and then go off to take care of something (there’s always something).  When I come back, the salt has dissolved and the water is lukewarm.

Important: Be sure to use non-iodized salt! There is a little scoop available to get the right amount of salt.  When you’re ready to begin the process, place the neti horn into one nostril and tilt your head to the other side.  Find the right angle, relax and pour with your mouth open.  It takes a while to cycle through.  When you’re done just blow your nose and do the same thing on the other side.  Just use lukewarm water or use the same method to dissolve the salt, great time to brush your teeth or hair.

Blow your nose and you’re done. Be sure that all the saline solution is out of your nostrils.  You should feel light and a lot better after the flush.  If your sinuses are already flaring there are instructions on how to open them up included with the neti pot.  If you have any pain or something doesn’t feel right – stop. If you’re not sure, ask your doctor or listen to your body, you know your body best!

My second favorite feature is the timing element of the Pulsonic.  Every 30 seconds there is a kind of pause with the brushing which signals you to move to another quadrant of the mouth. 

After 2 minutes there’s sort of a double pause (for lack of a better term) which signals that you can stop. 

Dental professionals recommend 2 minutes but I like to go to about three minutes.  I like to do two more 30 second segments on the inside part of my mouth when time permits.

 My smile has been whiter and brighter than ever. Brush off those unsightly discolorations and keep your teeth clean!  I almost forgot to mention, there are two modes on the Pulsonic toothbrush, “clean” and “sensitive”.  The sensitive mode is meant for your gums but I almost always use the “clean” which is still very gentle.
