Nail biting. I’ve battled it all my life and still struggle with it today. If I’m really stressed out/nervous or whatever, I’ll tear apart my cuticles, nails and nail bed meat (for lack of a better term). It’s very relaxing but looks horrible, so here are some tips on how to stop nail biting.

Have a game plan. Count on caring for your nails every five days or so. This is not set in stone but you should count on it as something is likely to make this necessary. A week seems too long for most nail polish and when your nails don’t look absolutely fabulous the tempation rises to chew, mangle or otherwise uglify your nails. The nicer your hands/nails look, the better chance of them staying that way!

Keep hands and nails moisturized and slathered in moisturizers. Moisturizers don’t taste that great which works out well for passive nail biting prevention. YUCK

Decide if you’re going to be a do-it-yourself-er or a salon mani. If you can afford it, it might be a nice treat to go to the salon, but at five day intervals that means about 6 times per month which can be expensive. But this also means you don’t have to even think about the choosing, buying and storage of nail polish which can be factored in. Two minutes in front of the polish rack and you’re on your way.

There are a lot of compromises to be made, possibly once a week at the salon with at home maintenance would work well for many women.

My personal game plan is to get a pro manicure once a month to cut cuticles and shape nails. I don’t enjoy doing these things myself and have little to no skill in this area. Since my nails are uneven it helps get a good result quickly. I will remove nail polish, possibly reapply polish myself and moisturize and massage cuticles daily for maintenance.

For those of you with the skill and dedication you must obviously have diy experience so you may need motivation or a little reminder. Keep it simple and together. Keep all your mani/pedi items in a shoe box or drawer. Having one place to go to for nail care will help things move faster when you’re ready to care for your nails. Which brings us to supplies…

Things to have on hand.

A small but vast array of nail polish, start off with a signature color (or two).

Tools: cuticle cutters, nail files, orange sticks to push back cuticles, those spongy toe seperators for pedicures, nail buffer and a nail brush

Nail Polish remover (I will be hunting for low fume types)

Nail biting is very hard to get over but I’m hoping that making myself accountable not only to myself, but to this blog will help me overcome it. My goal is to become a reformed nail biter!

Nails. I have a long sordid history with me and my nails. It all started in elementary school. That’s where I learned how to create fake nails with Elmer’s glue. Making oval shapes inside our metal desks, waiting until the next morning and then gluing the nail on with more Elmer’s glue. The nails would be discarded at the end of the day so our parents wouldn’t know.

I do like and appreciate a nice manicure and I have worn fake nails, diamond nail fills, silk wraps, nail tips and more for extended periods of time. Everything goes fine at first and then I feel guilty about the huge expense of going to the salon every 10 days, not to mention that I feel like things are rushed once the salon workers thing I’m completely committed. Does this happen to anyone else?

That’s when I usually take things in my own hands and turn to the drugstore variety, dabbling in the fake nail section at the drugstore is a regular feature in my life now. I usually only wear fake nails for special occassions and apply the day before so the nails are strong and unscratched.

I applied Broadway’s Real Life practical every nails one week ago today. I can tell you with all confidence that these are a great way to get a nice looking manicure with minimal effort and expense. Just push back your cuticles, apply the pink glue which is included and apply the nail. The directions are to use the tab, I don’t get them personally, I just apply with my other hand on the nail bed for a few seconds until the glue dries.

It takes only a few minutes to apply the nails but the best part is they are easy to come off, soak fingers in a little amount of acetone and voila. I will admit to you the biggest problem with fake nails for me is finding the brand/style I want when I want them. I’m going to the store TODAY to try and find these. Why? because in my experience once I like a style/shape they are never to be found again! sure there are comparables but I’m the type of person that likes continuity! so if you do try some nails you like, make sure you stock up!

Read more reviews of Broadway Real Life nails on Total Beauty, you’ll be so glad you did! Broadway’s Real Life nails are available in three convenient sizes, Petite, Real Short and Short. To recap, these are very easy to apply, most lasted four days and I re-applied. Be sure to keep the extras that don’t fit exactly in case you lose one!

In addition, I want the nail polish to be safe! NARS nail polish is Toluene, Formaldehyde and DBP free so you can apply without giving it a second thought. The colors are modern and sleek with packaging to match, mine sit next to my small collection of Chanel nail polish because of the square shape and cap!

Some factors that play into my theory of my brandwashing are: I don’t particluarly like the color dark blue, I haven’t had great experiences with Chanel nail polish, I haven’t even been wearing/thinking nail polish in months because I haven’t had time for nail maintenance and I wasn’t planning on spending $20 on nail polish. In spite of all this I walked out with my little bottle of blueness.

Chanel has this unexplainable hold on me, I love the packaging, the look, the history - everything. It’s just better when it’s Chanel. I hear Chanel and I buy buy buy, it’s almost become a command in my vocabulary. Blue Satin seems very blue and shimmery in the bottle and I couldn’t wait to get it on.

I applied my base coat as normal, then two coats of blue satin and a top coat. I didn’t give it much thought but this morning I really looked at it in the light, it is really dark. It’s very pretty but it’s definitely a dark navy blue / almost black and there is very little shimmer to it. Next time I apply I am going to try only one coat and see the effect. I don’t really expect it to stay looking nice more than 5 or 6 days, I do a lot around the house with my hands and it takes a toll on polish.

I don’t normally wear such dark polish but I like to live my life without ruling anything out and being open to try new things, especially new Chanel things! I am strongly considering going back to get another bottle or two. Blue Satin will go great with all your neutrals and blue jeans so have a little fun and try out the “it” color for Spring 2008.

Call me old fashioned, I’m sticking with my regular pedis until further notice.
