Durian?  I ate it twice, the first time is a very long and somewhat embarassing story.  The second was in a small inn in Thailand, pressured by locals I fell victim to tourist thinking - if I don’t eat this I’m not getting the full experience and if I don’t eat it I’ll regret it for the rest of my life because this is not available at the corner bodega.

I was pretty sure it was rotten by the horrible smell but I didn’t want to be rude, once I ate it I remembered that slimy texture and I involuntarily gagged and regurgitated some of it.  It’s haunted my mind since and now I see Dr. Murad, you know his great cosmetics I’m sure, thinks  Durian will make a great ingredient for skincare!! let’s hope he gets some great scents involved because if not it would be great skincare that doubles as birth control!

Total Beauty chatted with Dr. Howard Murad about trends in skincare and what we can
expect to see from his brand this year:

- “We know that natural/organic is a trend, but I like to look beyond that.
Ethnobotany is the trend. We go to different countries, to exotic places and
always find something new. In North Africa we saw that pomegranate was used
for medicinal purposes. Ginger in past Asian populations was used as an
antiseptic. And now we found a new plant to use called Durian from Asia that
will soon be in my products.”
- “These ingredients were hard to stabilize in the past, but we know how to
stabilize them now, which is why ethnobotany is an amazing trend.”
- “Skin immunity is also becoming important. We have come up with the
immuno-skin complex, which consists of a patent pending peptide. It has
demonstrated the improvement in immunity in skin, which reduces wrinkles.
There are other brands that talk about immunity, but in the sense of
antioxidants, not targeting the immune cells directly.”
